With new Dealers and Preferred customers coming on board every day, I feel it’s necessary to occasionally provide a little AMSOIL history. In doing so, I am hopeful that those just beginning their AMSOIL businesses and those Preferred customers who have become loyal to our products will gain additional appreciation for the leadership role we have earned in the industry. What many people don’t realize is that my research on synthetic motor oil began much sooner than the 1972 introduction of the original AMSOIL 10W-40. In the early-1960s, armed with the knowledge that synthetic oil was the only type of oil capable of withstandingthetremendousdemands of the engines in the jets I was flying, I reasoned why not bring that same technology to the automotive world? I was convinced it could extend the lives of automobile engines. I submerged myself in the study of lubrication and began formulating and marketing synthetic oils of my own. After several years, thousands of hours of intense research and a variety of oils under a variety of names we ultimately created the original AMSOIL 10W-40 Synthetic Motor Oil. That oil was tested at Southwest research in San Antonio, Texas and became the first synthetic motor oil to “meet or exceed API Service Classification SE engine test targets.” A clearly defined benchmark had been established. AMSOIL motor oil was tested, proven and documented by a single authoritative source, and for the first time a commercially available synthetic motor oil had been officially designated for use in automobile engines. The introduction of AMSOIL synthetic motor oil in 1972 launched the synthetic motor oil market. Nothing good in life, however, comes easy. The major oil companies and automobile manufacturers refused to recognize the superiority of our product. They fought us every step of the way. Then gradually, things began to change. Our Dealers were making progress and other circumstances came together to advance our cause. In 1974 when Mobil 1 was introduced, many Dealers expressed concern. They feared that with a second synthetic motor oil now on the market, our sales would suffer. I knew, however, that Mobil’s near-limitless advertising budget would ultimately work in our favor. They would spend millions to help educate the public on the benefits of synthetic oil. They did, and we grew. It was about this time that gasoline was in short supply and prices soared. fuel economy became a major concern, and gas-guzzlers of the sixties were being replaced by morefuel-efficientcompacts. As the need among consumers to cut fuel costs increased, our Dealers capitalized with sales of lubricants that actually did make a difference. Another event impacted the demand for synthetics. This one more subtle, perhaps, than the Mobil 1 introduction, but significant nonetheless, especially as an indicator of where the industry was headed. In early 1991, General Motors halted sales of the corvette Zr-1. eight engines had seized at its Bowling Green, Kentucky assembly plant. The temperature had dipped to slightly below freezing and, at start- up, hard-to-pump motor oil did not reach the front camshaft bearings. They were destroyed by lack of lubrication. GM responded by requiring the use of synthetic oil in the corvette. It was the first time an American auto manufacturer had required, not just recommended, the use of synthetic oil as a factory-fill. It was clear to me then that GM’s decision was just the beginning. More factory-fills would follow. The door had just opened a little wider for AMSOIL Dealers. Not long after the corvette was treated to synthetic oil, virtually all the other oil manufacturers began introducing synthetics of their own. They, like Mobil, spent millions advertising their “ground-breaking” new products. The floodgates had opened, and as awareness among consumers reached an all-time high, our sales climbed. Today, of course, consumer awareness has never been greater, and our reputation as the industry pioneer is firmly established. The AMSOIL track record speaks for itself. We have set the standards for lubricant performance and willcontinuetopushthoseboundaries. A.J. “Al” Amatuzio President and CEO, AMSOIL Inc. Encompassing 8,500+ square feet of the AMSOIL Center, the new facility expands the company’s abilities to test engine oil performance on-site, allowing quicker and more thorough test results for current products, developing products and competing products in both normal and extreme operating conditions. The Dyno Cells Cell 1 Houses a state-of-the-art water brake dynamometer capable of absorbing up to 1,500 hp at the crankshaft. Critical engine parameters are measured and stored with the integrated data acquisition software. The cell is currently equipped with a two-cycle engine for the measurement of oil detergency properties. Snowmobile in-chassis testing, hand-held power equipment testing and small gasoline-engine testing will also be conducted on this dyno. Cell 2 Houses an eddy current dynamometer capable of absorbing up to 175 hp at the crankshaft. Using an electromagnetic brake for absorption, it provides precise load control that allows identification of very small differences in engine performance. Critical engine parameters are measured and stored using proprietary software. The GM 3800 Series II 3.8L V6 gasoline engine in this cell provides extremely hot temperatures and allows in-depth testing and measuring of deposits, wear and oil durability. Cell 3 Houses a motorcycle-specific eddy current dynamometer capable of absorbing up to 200 hp at the rear wheel, with critical engine parameters measured and stored with the latest data acquisition software. A variable speed controlled fan simulates air speeds in excess of 65 mph during testing sequences. Designed for in-chassis testing of equipment such as motorcycles and ATVs, it currently holds a Harley-Davidson motorcycle. The company’s investment in this new state-of-the-art dyno facility will make it easier for us to stay on the cutting edge of lubricant technology and generate marketing materials that demonstrate AMSOIL product performance,” said AMSOIL Executive Vice President and COO Alan Amatuzio. “Having this dyno facility on-site allows faster testing turn- around times, testing flexibility that allows us to modify conditions to measure different oil properties and unique testing not available elsewhere. This all leads to better products and quicker product development.” “There are very few facilities in North America that have the combination of precision and capabilities available at the AMSOIL mechanical lab,” said AMSOIL Vice President, Technical Development Dan Peterson. “It gives AMSOIL the ability for testing, development and stress tests only available at major original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) or additive companies. And because the facilities and equipment are designed specifically for work in our main markets, we have the advantage of solving problems earlier". "It also allows us to not only do things that no one else is doing, but to do things that others think are impossible.” Well said Dan! Controlled test Environment Programmable Logic Control (PLC) automation of the air, water and fuel systems allows precise control of the testing environments within each cell, providing repeatable test results. Air PLC integration of intake and exhaust fans allows the setting of intake air pressure, and the combustion air system provides 3,000 cubic feet/minute (cfm) of temperature- and humidity-controlled air directly to the test engines. Intake air volume is adjustable to 20,000 cfm, and in-cell air can turn over 3.8 times per minute, ensuring excellent air quality throughout testing. Carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon sensors are installed in each cell to warn of any air-quality issues. Water A 4,000-gallon water supply tank provides ample process water to maintain engine temperatures throughout test sequences. All process water returns to the in-floor sump tank, and once it reaches a set level, it is pumped back to the supply tank. A roof-mounted cooling tower ensures the water returns to the supply tank at a preset temperature. Fuel An outdoor fuel supply tank stores 2,000 gallons of premium unleaded fuel for the dyno cells. All lines are fully welded for safety, and a pressure sensor is installed to detect system pressure loss, allowing shutdown of the fuel supply pump in the event of an unexpected fuel line breach. Fire safety Each dyno cell is protected from fire by the FM200 fire suppression system. This waterless system effectively extinguishes combustible, electrical and flammable- liquid fires quickly without causing collateral damage to equipment or personnel. The FM200 system includes five in-cell, ceiling-mount heat sensors, as well as manual pull stations inside and outside each cell. Chuck Gutleber 267-278-3556 AMSOIL Dealer ID #5067343 Email: FactorySynthetics.com Website: www.FactorySynthetics.com Although most motorists don’t think about them unless they notice a fluid leak, vehicles contain several different seals responsible for retaining lubricants within the system and keeping contaminants out. Seals are also responsible for confining pressure and keeping lubricants separated. Familiar locations include the crankshaft, transmission output shaft and axles. Made primarily of elastomers (synthetic rubber), modern seal materials offer increased performance and life.
But age, high mileage and storage can lead to drying and hardening, causing shrinking, cracking or tearing. In addition to fluid leaks, damaged seals can allow dirt and other contaminants to enter the system, negatively affecting performance. In the 1930s, manufacturers pioneered the custom manufacturing of elastomers. Common seal materials today include nitrile (buna-n [nBr]), neoprene, silicone, ethylene acrylic, polyacrylate and fluoroelastomer. Each material offers different strengths and weaknesses throughout different temperature ranges. Nitrile seals, better known as buna-n (nBr), are common in automotive applications due to their low cost and good resistance to oil, water, grease and other substances. However, nBr offers poor resistance to ozone and weather aging. ethylene acrylic and polyacrylate are often used in transmission and power- steering units. Wherever seals are installed and whatever they are made of, proper lubrication is required to maximize life and performance. Seal compatibility is achieved by selecting the proper base oils and additives that cause seals to swell at a slow, controlled rate over their usable lives. This allows the seal material to take the place of worn material to prevent premature leakage. Seal conditioners help keep seal materials supple to prevent them from becoming brittle and causing leaks. For example, valve seals prevent oil from entering the cylinder during the intake stroke. A dry, brittle seal may allow oil to leak past the seal and burn during combustion, causing the engine to use oil. Years ago, many erroneously believed synthetic oils were too slippery and leaked past seals. However, field studies and real-world use by countless motorists prove otherwise. Put to the test in a Las Vegas taxi cab driven over 100,000 miles in severe service, AMSOIL Signature Series 0W-20 Synthetic Motor Oil (ASM) and AMSOIL Signature Series Multi-Vehicle Synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) delivered excellent protection for seals and offered reliable, no-leak protection. See the Las Vegas Taxi Cab Field Study (g3118) for details. AMSOIL synthetic lubricants are formulated and tested to be fully compatible with modern seal materials. They deliver excellent seal protection and compatibility, helping them function properly throughout their service lives. Where do you buy your AMSOIL? Today's blog was inspired by a topic that I seam to be asked quite often when speaking to people about AMSOIL. When I am out attending car shows, race events. etc, I usually have a few people come to me and say, oh, I been using AMSOIL for some time now. Or, the total opposite, I was using AMSOIL but I cannot find it in my local area no more. They would ask, why is it that AMSOIL is not available everywhere? The answer to this is simple, you will never find AMSOIL in a big box store such as Wal-Mart, Pep-boys or a AutoZone type corporate store. Why is this, again the answer is quite simple, AMSOIL is distributed by independent dealers, people like you! How does that work, what is an Independent AMSOIL Dealer? Well, since 1972 AMSOIL CEO & Founder Mr. Al Amatuzio decided that direct selling would be the perfect fit for AMSOIL. Mr Amatuzio wanted to be sure that people understood the basic concepts, features and benefits that his synthetic oil would provide for their equipment. After building his team of Independent dealers throughout the country he decided that it would be best not to jump into business with the big box stores. By doing this Mr. Amatuzio would be protecting his dealer network, their accounts and their accounts customers from the corporate politics in today's market place. Dealers could now continue to educate the small mom & pop stores and repair shops with the same product knowledge that his independent AMSOIL dealers had.... Just imagine going to the women in isle 5 at your local Walmart and asking her how long will this oil last? Maybe try the asking the kid at AutoZone what's the difference between the conventional oil and the synthetic oil. His answer would probably be, well the price is a bit more but I here it works kind of good! With that being said, AMSOIL dealers are always looking to register new accounts to stock AMSOIL Synthetics Lubricants in their stores. Rest assure that you will always get the best lubricants for your equipment from AMSOIL and that all your questions will be answered either by the retailer themselves or a quick phone call to their Independent AMSOIL Dealer.
